What I hope . . .

I am aware that the school versus non-school distinction is an example of a binary that warrants deconstruction. It is a useful distinction that exists already in discourses around schooling, for example, curriculum versus extra-curricular activities, schoolwork versus other work, homework versus home play. By engaging with and challenging binaries about examples such as these, this study has the potential to challenge and transform dominant understandings and practices of school learning.

The way you phrased the statement made me think of being "in school" but out (perhaps in one's head) or "out of school" but in, i.e. thinking about school. Or, we place much emphasis on place and space which both performs and is performed and maybe thinking about just what is being performed might be more interesting than where, though the where is always being performed as well. Now isn't that wonderfully confusing?

Confusing, but I think it sounds quite accurate. It seems that the binary concept is quite pertinent to kids. School - that's what we do when we have to.

BTW, how do I get the comments to show on the page?

School is performed in places and spaces where it has to be, but it could be performed in their home and leisure space without them realizing it, and for some of my participants, it was. However, learning could also be performed at school without the thought of it being performed as a school thing, if there is good teaching going on. Many of them didn't see the relevance of school to their everyday lives, but many of their schoolteachers didn't know about their competence and expertise in their "out of school"/home life.

I think the comments on the page is a setting for your blog- but not quite sure which.

And i think the notion of just what is school - is it a place or is it a state of mind? - is important. I guess I was talking in terms of a performative take, i.e. school is performed and performs.

this is a great site; and a great project; re comments: under settings and 'comments' you have to put yes to Show comments; and No to show comments in a popup window.
